The author of several books on good practice in psychotherapy, Feasey (formerly, Univ. of Central Lancashire, UK) has worked as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years. Here he presents a candid and compelling account of psychotherapy as currently practiced, by examining basic concepts and issues with a critical viewpoint. Writing in an informal style--and deliberately eschewing professional jargon--the author focuses on "the interpersonal sphere," which means he invests the book with his own emotional energy as well as that of his clients Of particular note is the inclusion of extensive case-history material, which makes up about a quarter of the book. This is essentially a primer of practice, and as such it will serve a wide audience: those considering a career in psychotherapy and wondering what it is all about; those engaged in practice, who will appreciate Feasey's thoughtful account of key issues; and those contemplating visiting a psychotherapist, who will gain a tangible understanding of what to expect from a competent psychotherapist. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
