Review by Library Journal Review

Suave movie icon Marcello Mastroianni plays against type as a lonely, reticent man whose chance encounter with an anxious young woman pining for a departed lover leads to a tentative romance based on desperation and dreams. Shooting in black-and-white on a strikingly atmospheric studio set, Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) creates an illusory feel for his adaptation of Dostoyevsky's short story "White Nights." Extras include an audio recording of the short story. For larger collections. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
