In this volume, Byman (Georgetown University's Center for Peace and Security Studies) and Pollack (Brookings Institute) provide an analysis of possible spillover of Iraqi sectarian violence and its political consequences, including its impact on Iraq's neighbors and US interests. The authors contend that the US should prepare for the eventuality of such spillover and have a contingency plan in place to meet its possible fallout and challenges. Through case studies of civil wars in Afghanistan, Congo, Lebanon, Somalia, and Yugoslavia, the authors provide a useful analysis regarding the lessons of these conflicts. Based on that analysis, they offer some insight into possible future scenarios. They also make specific policy recommendations on how to curb the negative consequences of the spillover. This is a timely book that addresses an important issue with unmistakable political and policy implications. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
