This scholarly compendium of articles describes various Earth analogs to surface features on Mars. Contributors are many of the major players in the Martian analog field. For those who know this field and are interested in having a reference where the full spectrum of analogs can be found in one place, this could be a volume of interest. More detailed descriptions of the sites and more rigorous comparisons to their sister Martian features, however, can be found in the peer-reviewed literature. For those who are not Martian analog scholars, however, this book falls short. Though not the case for all entries, too many simply describe the selected analog site or feature in terms of superficial characteristics, neglecting any discussion of what these analogs tell us quantitatively in terms of fundamental Martian surface or internal planetary processes. In terms of production values, the print in the book is light, almost grey, making it hard to read. Many of the photographs, especially of the Martian surface, lacked adequate contrast, making what could be stunning images muddy and generally uninteresting. Summing Up: Recommended.
