According to Marzano, the most salient feature of an effective school is its individual teachers. Research shows that pupil achievement is impacted by an effective teacher. The author argues that effective teaching is a dynamic mixture of instructional strategies and a deep understanding of the individual students in class and their needs. In other words, effective teaching is an art as well as a science. The author presents a comprehensive model of effective instruction in the form of 10 questions, e.g.: What will I do to help students effectively interact with new knowledge? What will I do to communicate high expectations for all students? The questions represent a logical planning sequence for effective instructional design, and they have been discussed in the book's ten chapters. The book is easy to read and reflects current research and thinking on different aspects of classroom teaching such as teacher expectations, questioning, lesson design, and reflection. Included are figures, charts, diagrams, tables, rubrics, and graphic organizers to help teachers examine practices and develop new skills. Summing Up: Recommended.
