Cook delivers just what she promises: a methodical review of the psychological research on androgyny. Beginning with a comparison of the concepts of masculinity/femininity and the newer alternative concepts of androgyny, the review proceeds with analysis of the methods, empirical findings, and practical uses of androgyny. The review is thorough and well organized; it provides an exceptional guide through the intricacies-and even the contradictions-of androgyny research. A fine summary of a new and popular area of psychological inquiry is provided but it does not treat the historical, sociological, or economic factors that must be assessed for a critical understanding of the appearance and popularity of androgyny research. The book is clear, contains ample references, and stands as a valuable addition to any undergraduate or graduate collection that maintains current materials on sex roles.-J.B.
