An excellent translation from the original 1983 French text, Dupraz's book provides the basic necessary background in communication theory, an emerging field in electrical engineering. Dupraz begins with a tutorial on random processes and random vectors and a review on deterministic signals. In the second half he deals with random signals, weakly stationary random signals, and elements of measurement theory. Extensive tables and other reference materials included at the end are invaluable and helpful to the reader. The presentation is clear in spite of the fact that it is a translation; it is amply illustrated with figures and examples. Another attractive feature is that detailed instructions are given to the reader on solving the end-of-chapter exercises. Ideal either as a textbook for an upper-division class or as a reference for students in electrical engineering.-J.Y. Cheung, University of Oklahoma
