Originally published in German as Walther Rathenau's Tagebuch 1907-1922 (1967), this translation's editorial comments have been updated on the basis of recent publications and archival findings. Publication of both editions shows the importance of Rathenau in the arenas indicated by the book's English subtitle. Unless one already knows something about the man, however, the contents of this book will not make much sense, for Rathenau's diary entries are largely notes filed with names-perhaps for a future autobiography. The editor does provide copious annotations, a splendid biographical index, a generous general index, and a useful bibliography. An introductory biographical sketch seems to be a summary of the editor's forthcoming study of Rathenau as a ``master of capitalism.'' Graduate readership.-H.D. Andrews, Towson State University
