This book delves into a wide range of contemporary topics as they relate to Latin America's human geography. Fourteen chapters analyze topics that range from economic and political development to migration, urbanization, borderlands, tourism, drugs, citizenship, and cinematic spaces. The topics range in scale from the local to the global. Latin America is experiencing important changes that need to be addressed and understood. This collection provides insights on many of these transformations, showing the region as a dynamic, adaptive area adjusting continually to changes in a competitive world environment. Many of the authors also discuss how the past, including the colonial period, has helped shape the present. Chapters can be read on a stand-alone basis, but readers should peruse the entire book for a fuller understanding of the region's current conditions. Helpful bibliographic citations are found at the end of most chapters. Written by geographers, the compilation provides a greater understanding of issues facing the region, themes not commonly found in texts and other printed material. For that reason alone, the book is an important read for all those interested in Latin America. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. L.
