A most up-to-date treatment of technical and scientific aspects of the complex problem of earthquake prediction. Mogi, one of the top authorities in the world, specializes in Japanese earthquake research and prediction efforts, but the applications of these data are worldwide; California studies are also prominent. Major topics covered include physical basis of earthquake prediction, outline of earthquake prediction studies, reports from Japan, and strategy for earthquake prediction. The numerous illustrations for each chapter directly support the text and are well chosen to efficiently educate the reader. Also, at the end of each chapter are many carefully selected references. A succinct text, excellent illustrations, select references, and the organization of the book make it an outstanding work on the subject of earthquakes and state-of-the-art prediction. Recommended for libraries serving graduate students and professionals in seismology, geology, and seismic engineering.-T.L.T. Grose, Colorado School of Mines
