One in the new and rapidly growing series of praiseworthy art historical bibliographies published by G.K. Hall, this compilation of 914 titles covers the subject of painting (primarily panels rather than manuscript illumination) during the late gothic period in Bruges after Jan van Eyck (d. 1441) and Petrus Christus (d. 1473). The main artists covered in the bibliography are Hans Memling (236 entries) and Gerard David (104 entries), but among others included, because of the influence of Bruges on their painting, are the peripatetic Michiel Sittow and Juan de Flandes. The bibliography will be a blessing to those who need the difficult-to-locate information on the many anonymous paintings from Bruges and on the unidentified artists known only as this or that ``master.'' The volume is more than a source of individual references; the compiler's historiographical introduction, his descriptive notes on the entries, and the chronological organization of each section provide a history of the knowledge in this field. Recommended for all libraries serving art historical research, upper-division undergraduates and graduate students.-C.W. Talbot, Smith College
