A good survey of the ways in which different lines of evidence are integrated to provide insight into the spatial and temporal changes during the Quaternary and their effects on the landscape. First, Lowe examines the nature of the evidence as determined by examination of the morphology, lithology, and flora and fauna found in an area. A good summary follows of the various dating methods and stratigraphic analysis particularly applicable to Quaternary studies. The final chapter is a summary of the history of the Devensian (Wisconsinan) glacial stage of the British Isles that clearly demonstrates the integrated use of the material discussed in the rest of the book; most of the examples cited are from the British Isles. The illustrations and extensive bibliography add much to a work designed for the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate student.-D.F. Eschman, University of Michigan
