This work provides a useful introduction to the study of research trends in the public communication of science and technology. It is particularly strong in showing the changes in this field, ranging from the ideas of popularization and a general understanding of science to an active, engaging dialogue between scientists and the broader society. With editors and contributors from various parts of the world, the book is particularly sensitive to international issues. The handbook is organized very effectively and offers a wide variety of examples, which show how the discussion of science and technology permeates the social and cultural landscape. Each of the 17 chapters offers a useful, clearly written introduction to an area of focus like science journalism, public policy and nongovernmental organizations, and cinematic science, to name just a few. Chapters include thorough reference lists to assist users in expanding their research. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All general, professional, and academic collections, lower-division undergraduate and above. G. D. Oberle III George Mason University
