As a walk down the pain relief aisle of any drugstore shows, headache is a common malady. In its chronic form, it often leads to extensive pain and suffering, which generally results in physical, psychological, and social impairment. Borkum (psychology, Univ. of Maine) offers a comprehensive work, divided into four parts. Part 1 focuses on the basic science and clinical presentation of headaches, including their diagnostic criteria. Part 2 provides more in-depth information on the different types of headaches, e.g., migraines, tension-type, and cluster. Part 3 furnishes a clinical guide incorporating information on headache triggers, medications, clinical assessments, and behavioral medicine. The final part concentrates on behavioral medicine treatment, outcomes, and future directions. The most notable feature of this work is its conceptual integration, which affords an easy reading experience. Researchers, clinicians, graduate students, academicians, and general readers may dive into an area of particular interest and obtain information that is well mapped to related parts of the text. From diagnostic criteria to evaluation to treatment, this volume is a compendium of current knowledge about headache. Written in a clear style, the book features topical and name indexes, a glossary, and an extensive reference list. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above in the health care field, especially practitioners. J. D. Campbell University of Missouri--Columbia
