In this engaging, well-researched book, Hennen (Ohio State Univ., Newark) presents ethnographic case studies of three gay male subcultures--faeries, bears, and leathermen--and their response to effeminacy and its historical link to male homosexuality. Through the use of participant and nonparticipant observation, semistructured in-depth interviews with 23 representative subjects culled from the three communities, and extensive historical comparative archival research, the author weaves a complex portrait of each subculture and how their respective members actively construct and reconstruct their individual and community identities. In doing so, he explores the intersection of gender, the body, sexuality, and history, masterfully illustrating the intricate roles each plays in the ongoing process of identity formation and sexual expression within these distinct subcultures. Throughout the book, Hennen utilizes vivid "thick description" from his time spent in the field, as well as many illuminative excerpts from his interviewees, resulting in a fascinating, engrossing read. A most welcome addition to the growing body of research on men and masculinity, men's studies, and queer studies. Summing Up: Recommended. Most levels/libraries. J. R.
