Sindermann (an oceanologist who directs the Sandy Hook Marine Laboratory in New Jersey and also authored Winning the Games Scientists Play ) explores the avenues open to career scientists and what they may expect from their work, considering both traditional research and educational roles as well as government and entrepreneurial options. It is difficult to determine the book's audience since it does not add to the understanding of work motivation nor does it probe deeply into the actual routine of a scientist. Sinderman draws on the experiences of his colleagues, but concealing the identity and circumstances of his ``cases'' makes these vignettes lose their punch. High school students may find some career stimulus here, but those already in the work force will find nothing new. Janet E. Corson, Charles Cty. P.L., Md. (c) Copyright 2010.
