Part of a multivolume series, this slender monograph, edited by Stavans (Encyclopedia Latina), amasses essential, previously published essays by nine writer-activists and cultural studies scholars. The book is divided into three thematically organized segments: the first offers perspectives on cultural context, habitual usage, and hybrid morphologies; the second considers the media's and language's reciprocal influences; and the final segment casts language as a persistent weapon and puts the language to use in its own subject definition. Fully indexed and concluding with a one-page bibliography; recommended for Latino, linguistic, and cultural studies collections.-Savannah Schroll Guz, formerly with Smithsonian Lib., Washington, DC (c) Copyright 2010.
