In a volume unique in content and especially intent, a well-known Catholic theologian criticizes an official Vatican document, warning the church against its aberrations. Segundo first shows that the rejection of liberation theology contained in the Sacred Congregation's ``Instruction'' of September 1984 is rooted in a dualistic, other-worldly theology that destroys the unity between God and history which Vatican Council II so clearly proclaimed. He then proceeds to illustrate how the Vatican's rejection of Marxism and of the popular church has little to do with what liberation theologians are really saying and doing. Despite his polemical intent, Segundo makes his case carefully and respectfully. A timely, even urgent, addition for collections on contemporary religion.
