Chicano literature, says Luis Leal in his introduction to this work, is now widely acknowledged as ``that literature written by authors of Mexican background born or residing permanently in the United States . . . .'' The nearly 800 entries embrace the standard literary genres, anthologies, critical works (including dissertations), and audio-visual materials. Excluded are children's literature and criticism of individual authors, while a new category, ``literatura chicanesca'' (i.e., ``written by non-Chicanos about the Chicano experience'') appears. Leal's introduction serves as an informative bibliographic essay to the field. Recommended for Chicano studies and larger humanities collections. Charles E. Perry, Central Coll.
