Sociology of education professor Weis (SUNY Buffalo) has written many books about class, gender, race, and schools. Here, she has assembled a good reader on how social class differences are made and experienced. Almost all of the empirical work is about schooling, though there are some framing chapters about class in general. The whole book has a decided left-of-center and social constructivist cast, but the bulk of the studies are empirical enough that readers of all ideological and theoretical views can find much of value. Aimed at students, a list of discussion questions is included at the end of each article. The book should also be useful to teachers and scholars as an introduction to many of the best current studies in class and education, pointing to the larger works from which the readings come.
