This newly translated title along with W.J. Richardson's Heidegger: Through Phenomenology to Thought (2nd ed., 1967) are two classic works on the German thinker. Happily we here have Magurshak and Barber's excellent English rendition of the German text. (Der Denkweg Martin Heideggers, Neske, 1963). The book traces Heidegger's journey from his early neo-scholasticism through his late concern for the ``poetic theology'' of the German poet Holderlin. The influences on Heidegger of St. Paul, St. Augustine, Dilthey, and phenomenology are also outlined. This book is a rich introduction to Heidegger that reveals Poggeler's sound scholarship and philosophical criticism. Also included are a special preface written for this edition and the afterword to the second German edition. Recommended for faculty, graduate students, and upper-division undergraduates in philosophy and German studies.-H.N. Tuttle, University of New Mexico
