Sociologist Walker (Univ. of Stellenbosch) lucidly explores forced removals and emotional dispossession during the apartheid era, from the direct testimony of the South African victims of race-based land removals. The author takes readers carefully through the tortuous and dismal South African journey--from the Natives Land Act of 1913 to the 1995 Commission on Restitution of Land Rights--in the context of major case studies and innumerable interviews. This well-written text vividly exposes the tragedy that was South African apartheid and so, too, the resilience of its victims. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Undergraduates and graduates as well as a general readership. G. Emeagwali Central Connecticut State University
