It is very helpful to have this checklist of Oates's writings, including poems, essays, and stories published singly in periodicals. Entries for essays have annotations. The checklist is divided by form (e.g., novels, stories, plays), and prefaced by a table listing Oates's works chronologically by form. The second section lists bibliographies (including those in journals), dissertations, criticism in periodicals and books (annotated), and reviews arranged alphabetically by title of work reviewed. There are two subject indexes, one to Oates's essays, the other a general index by work, critic, and name of periodical. The preface, by Bruce F. Michelson, offers well-written comments on Oates's career. The only disappointment is that the section of criticism from books and periodicals is so small. MLA International Bibliography cites a number of critical writings which Lercang;ee did not include. Nevertheless, this is an excellent checklist of Oates's writings, which are numerous and elusive, and a well-arranged resource. Undergraduate libraries.-A. Maio, University of Hartford
