Following Out in the Field: Reflections of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (CH, Dec'96, 34-2245) and Out in Theory: The Emergence of Lesbian and Gay Anthropology (CH, Apr'03, 40-4699), this third volume is an impressive array of reports that detail a much wider, even global, public recognition of lesbian and gay lifestyles. In previous years, this recognition was far less commonly documented and rarely taken seriously, but that is no longer the case. Lewin and Leap have gathered the work of anthropologists whose fieldwork experience has been in contrasting settings and cultures in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa. The title reflects a growing attention to the importance of "non-normative" sexual life styles, together with their influence on so many aspects of political and economic affairs, as well as the arts, both visual and theatrical, sports, and the armed services. Some may deny these influences, others may inflate them, and still others would just rather not know about them, a no-win option. The data are here in this and the previous two volumes, which are available in hard cover and paperback. Hopefully, the same will be true of this present work. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
