This new edition (1st and 2nd eds. by Hegedus; CH, Jul'94, 31-6052; CH, Dec'99, 37-2183) elucidates the synthesis mechanisms of compounds using transition metals and appropriate ligands to prepare novel catalysts. Hegedus (emer., Colorado State) and Soderberg (West Virginia Univ.) lead readers through formalisms of electron counting using the 18-electron rule. This content is well within the understanding of undergraduate chemistry students. The authors address the preparation of transition metal catalysts, how they relate to commonly used catalysts, and their kinetics. The book also discusses the solvent systems of organic synthesis reactions--more specifically, explanation of organometallic reaction mechanisms and applications to the synthesis of transition metal complexes of hydrides, carbenes, alkenes, dienes, alkynes, allyls, and arenes. These mechanisms include insertion, electrophillic substitution, nucleophilic attacks, elimination, transmetallation, coupling, carbonylation, and addition, to name just a few. Organometallic complex syntheses techniques have greatly enhanced/expanded the synthetic tools necessary for preparing unique organic compounds needed to progress to the next phase of new, sophisticated organic synthesis. The authors provide practical tips on inexpensive green solvents and advice on the least expensive, low-toxicity transition metals available.
