This volume is timely in the sense that psychologists and researchers are discovering the importance of studying the physiological components of self. But Fogel (psychology, Univ. of Utah, Salt Lake City) focuses significantly less on documenting how physiology and self are related and more on how one can "rediscover"--become aware of--and use this connection. He presents research and case examples to support his claims that embodied self-awareness can improve day-to-day functioning and, ultimately, satisfaction with one's life. He argues that the absence of embodied self-awareness can create specific difficulties, and for each of these he presents techniques that one can employ to discover and strengthen the awareness and, thereby, alleviate the difficulty. Though intended for the therapeutic minded and not the hard-core scientist, the book is grounded in science, even compelling and useful to scientists. But this reviewer can easily imagine the academic reader getting bogged down in jargon that sounds uncomfortably "self-help." Summing Up: Recommended. Astute general readers; professionals. R. E.
