This is the 52nd in an ongoing series of country bibliographies designed to serve as interdisciplinary bibliographic guides to sources in broad fields ranging from history and politics to housing and education. The format of the series calls for selective coverage of primarily English-language sources from books and articles in journals published since 1970. Based on these criteria, the compiler of this volume, a reference librarian at Hofstra, has done a judicious job in selecting the most important sources on all aspects of Puerto Rican life. She has often gone beyond the general guidelines to include major Spanish-language sources. All of the 605 entries are annotated, some critically. Several sections contain relatively complete monographic coverage through late 1984. Included are major studies of the Escuela de Estudios Hispano-Americanos in Seville, Spain, and numerous publications of the Universidada de Puerto Rico. Major GPO publications include the 1980 censuses, the Controller General's report on Puerto Rico's political future, and a study on the climate of Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. A good author/title/subject index and a map complement this excellent guide for interested laypersons, and high school and college students. Researchers doing more advanced work on Puerto Rico should note the guides to periodicals and the sections on archives and bibliographies.-B.E. Coutts, Rice University
