Following their highly successful second edition (1979), which appeared more than 30 years ago, Snyder (LC Resources) and Kirkland (Advanced Materials Technology) have teamed with Dolan (LC Resources) and additional collaborators to provide an excellent update of their earlier work. Updates include a chapter titled "Biochemical and Synthetic Polymer Separations" and discussions of multidimensional liquid chromatography and relevant developments in solid-phase extraction. One could quibble with delaying discussion of gradient elution to the middle of the text or placing the chapter titled "Sample Preparation" near the end of the book, but most of the information that chromatographers would want and need is touched on. The authors have done a notable job in attempting to include "everything" related to the field, although some topics are discussed in more depth than others. This reviewer's personal concerns are the limited information on LC/MS methods, which dominate the field of biomolecule analysis; the inappropriate use of the term "hyphenated detectors"; and section 4.14, "Mass Spectral Detectors," which contains many errors. However, overall, the book provides very useful theoretical, chemical, and practical information. It will continue to be a key reference in the field. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
