CERN theoretical particle physicist Giudice opens a fascinating set of windows into the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The first part of the book is a brief but cogent history of particle physics, including many interesting anecdotes not commonly related elsewhere. The second section dissects the LHC hardware itself. It is hard to imagine a reader who would not be outright amazed by this account of the engineering challenges that were met and mastered in order to construct the LHC. In the third and final section, the author guides the lay reader through the questions the LHC was designed to answer. The book introduces tests of the Standard Model as well as competing theories that go beyond it and into the as-yet unexplored "zeptospace" of the book's title. The analogies used to give non-initiates a sense of the issues involved are for the most part successful. This book should interest readers at all levels who want to know what the LHC and particle physics are all about. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. K. D.
