Frayn presents a nice review of/introduction to physiological aspects of metabolism. Topics as diverse as digestion, carbohydrate and fat metabolism interactions, and diabetes are considered. This book would be of tremendous use as a supplemental resource for nutrition students, nursing and other health professional students, and the beginning graduate student in physiology. Although each topic is covered fairly briefly, the true value of the book lies in its overall message of the interrelatedness of metabolic processes within the organs of the body. One is left with an enhanced sense of the connectedness of the body's organs from a biochemical/metabolic perspective. The discussion of weight control from a metabolic perspective contains some invaluable advice for many would-be dieters. The author has done a good job of presenting, in a straightforward but at times witty and humorous manner, the somewhat complex biochemistry of lipoprotein metabolism and hormonal control of body metabolism. Informative and well-conceived figures and tables. The book is quite readable and engaging and would interest a more general audience as well as undergraduates. K. M. Susman Vassar College
