An anthology of 24 papers representing contributions by 32 researchers, this volume is an up-to-date, technically written treatment of a very active research area in ecology. Although a few examples in some of the papers deal with predation in intertidal or marine communities, this collection is disproportionately weighted toward predator-prey interactions in freshwater habitats. Three principal subject areas are: direct and indirect influences of top predators on food-web dynamics; chemically mediated predator-prey interactions; and the means predators have in modifying the biology of prey organisms. Each paper represents current ideas, is quite authoritative, and contains numerous useful illustrative materials plus an extensive list of references. There is a surprisingly small degree of writing unevenness between papers-a fact that compliments the editorial process. A most valuable reference for all aquatic ecologists and for others who are interested in predator-prey interactions, this volume will be indispensable for libraries supporting ecologists, ecological research, and graduate training in ecology or related disciplines.-P.E.
