This light ethnography, a revised version of Corr's 2000 dissertation with some additional fieldwork, supplements Peter Wogan's 2004 Magical Writing in Salasaca, which focused on the central Ecuadorian highland community of Salasaca. Two of the eight chapters have been previously published. Anthropologist Corr (Florida Atlantic Univ.) is interested in how the Salasacans selected, centered, and manipulated Catholic symbols and texts as a process of local religious transculturation. She focuses on how through narrative and ritual, religious change was made in the local cultural context, how the indigenous peoples shaped their religion, and what practices emerged from historical processes and cultural encounters. Of particular use to scholars of Ecuadorian culture, the book is enhanced by 12 figures. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. D. L. Browman Washington University
