Summary:Small children down the centuries have played with rattles, though initially they were not designed merely as toys. Babies needed protection against possible assailants and could ward them off by making a noise with a rattle. This usage gradually died out, but the rattle stayed because it was such a popular toy. The province of Antwerp's Sterckshof Silver Museum felt it was high time to take a closer look at this extraordinary object; hence it proudly presents the exhibition "Corals and bells. A collection of rattles."
