A thorough, up-to-date analysis of the medical economics and financial management literature and of the policy implications of a variety of federal and nonfederal cost-containment strategies. Topics covered include causes of health care cost inflation; the relationships between productivity enhancement and quality assurance; the special role of medical education institutions; hospital strategies for coping with the new environment; the application and results of cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, and technology assessment studies; and future policy trends and options. The volume's strong points include the current and extensive citations provided and the assembling of so much information. Supposedly aimed at managers, policymakers, providers, medical economists, and students, the technical analysis too often limits use to only the functional specialist or advanced graduate student. Also, the exposition is often difficult to follow. In any event, the real value would be at graduate level where other books available are not so current and comprehensive.-J.M.
