Domschke and Goyer (Population Research Center, University of Texas at Austin) have prepared the second title of a four-volume reference work on national population censuses. As with the earlier work on the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, this book provides for each sovereign nation or geographically separated area a historical overview of the censuses conducted and a brief description of the content and geographical coverage of each specific national survey. No demographic data is given. Emphasis is placed on the post1945 period. To assist the user in determining whether a particular census should be consulted, a section is included at the end of each entry, titled ``Quality of the Census.'' To the work is appended a topical index that facilitates comparative studies of, e.g., education, fertility, religion, industry. The main US repository and other relevant statistical publications are also given. Considering the specialized nature of this high-quality tool, it is recommended for purchase by research libraries serving relevant graduate programs.-J.M. Robson, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
