Biographical directory of the South Carolina Senate, 1776-1985 /

A significant expansion and revision of Emily Reynolds and Joan Faunt's one-volume Biographical Directory of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, 17761964 (1964), this new directory is superior in nearly every way, especially in the extensive sources listed after each biographical entry. The index contains references to all persons whose names are mentioned in the body of the biographical articles. The appendix contains valuable rosters of Senate members of every General Assembly to date, as well as maps showing changes in Senate election districts over time. It might have been useful for the editors to have included chronological lists of senators for each separate district, even though there have been several boundary changes in Senate districts. This handsomely bound set should be a required acquisition for all South Carolina libraries and for any other libraries with strong collecting interests in southern history and political science.-C.V.
