This directory of hands-on science centers located throughout the U.S. was created by a former director and president of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, who was also the founding director of the museum management program at the University of Colorado. More than 260 institutions are organized into sections for Science Centers (General) and Specialized Science Centers and arranged alphabetically by the name of the center. The first section is further divided into Early Science Centers (meaning those founded in the 1930s to 1960s), Extensive Science Centers, and Children's Science Centers. The Specialized Science Centers section is organized by topic, such as astronomy and nature. Each listing includes a history of the center, a description, and information such as address, hours of operation, admission fees, etc. The almost 30-page introduction provides a valuable history of hands-on science centers. The index lists the places and people's names, but there is unfortunately no indexing by location. This is a well-researched directory, and though much of the information can be gained from the centers' Web sites, having data about so many facilities in one place is convenient. A geographical finding aid would have made the volume even more useful.--Marcus, Sara Copyright 2010 Booklist
