Norman's last book was an introduction to ethics titled The Moral Philosophers (1983). In Free and Equal he presents a clear, well-organized, and readable discussion of freedom and equality from a positivist and socialist point of view. The book is similar in purpose and scope to Norman E. Bowie and Robert L. Simon's The Individual and the Political Order: An Introduction to Social Philosophy (2nd ed., 1986),which, however, is more traditional in its approach and details a greater variety of thinkers and problems. For the average undergraduate the Bowie/Simon text will be more challenging and-in the long run-more helpful. However, academic libraries that already have this title may find the Norman work useful either because it is more simplified or advances a competing view. Appropriate for general readers and undergraduates.-G.J. Dalcourt, Seton Hall University
