520 | |a Excellent photographic essay illustrates the architectural patrimony of Santa Cruz de Mompox, one of the most beautiful jewels of the Spanish Colony, located along the banks of the river Magdalena. Founded in 1540 the colonial city is named after one of its founders and Mompoj, the last chief of the Indians that inhabited the site. For 4 centuries Mompox played a privileged commercial role in the Spanish colonization in the northern part of South America and flourishing as trading post. The violence and of the Independence wars and the changes in course of the river lead to the decline of the city. It is precisely these isolation circumstances that preserved almost intact the harmony and integrity of the historical center. Acclaimed 19th century poet and author Candelario Obeso was born in this beautiful town. The book is a tribute to Afro-Colombian culture with accompanying texts by Obeso's most recognized work, the collection of poems "Cantos Populares de mi Tierra", published in 1877. Mompox was declared historical site by UNESCO since 1995. | ||
