In this excellent monograph, conservation biologist Lebbin and Parr and Fenwick (all, American Bird Conservancy) survey, for the first time, the comprehensive status of bird conservation in the Americas, primarily focusing on North America. Throughout are attractive mapping, stunning photography, authoritative text, and logical, helpful clusters of chapters on major subject areas. "WatchList Birds" provides accounts for 212 US birds--priority species for conservation--with a color plate, map, and text sections on distribution, threats, conservation, and action. "Habitats" gives an overview of 12 major North American habitats (tundra, wetlands, grasslands, etc.) and includes several prime site descriptions within each, accompanied by the same features as the "WatchList" accounts. The third major section, "Threats," includes sections such as "Habitat Loss," "Pollution and Toxics," and "Climate Change," and describes problems, solutions, and actions. A fourth section, "International Bird Conservation," covers seven important Latin American areas. There are many other features including state-by-state conservation priorities; agency, organization, and environmental law listings and annotations; a glossary; a bibliography that includes Internet resources; and a valuable unified index. A beautiful production visually, the book is inviting as well as an unprecedented, rewarding conservation reference source. Summing Up; Highly recommended. All academic, general, and professional audiences. H. T. Armistead formerly, Free Library of Philadelphia
