This volume is concerned with the two genera that produce the all-important beta-lactam antibiotics-there are chapters on the taxonomy, morphology and physiology, and the genetics of Penicillium and Acremonium species. The remaining chapters discuss the chemistry and biosynthesis of the penicillins and cephalosporins, the secondary metabolites of both genera and the extracellular enzymes of Penicillium species. References are up to date and there are both species and subject indexes. Readers should also keep in mind K.B. Raper and C. Thoms's A Manual of the Penicillia (1949); J.I. Pitt's The Genus Penicillium and Its Teleomorphic States: Eupenicllium and Talaromyces (1979), and C. Ramirez's Manual and Atlas of the Penicillia (1982). None of these books is outdated and all add to our knowledge and appreciation of these interesting fungi. For university biology libraries.-R.F. Gehrig, Russell Sage College
