This work is primarily about the second of the three main characters in the book's title. In his third major Mormon studies work, Davies (Durham Univ., UK) explores the multiple roles of Jesus in Mormon thought. In discussing changing conceptions of the Plan of Salvation--the blueprint of Mormon theology--Davies disregards any line between theology and history, emphasizing the ways in which theological tropes have been "creatively appropriated under changing historical circumstances." Although many individual parts of this work are worth the effort of reading, that effort is not insignificant. As with his other Mormon studies volumes, the reach of Davies's scholarship is limited by his habits of composition. This volume consists of dense chapter sections set in a meandering, almost free-associative arrangement in which discerning a pattern is often difficult. Davies's erudition is without question, but even scholars with a strong knowledge of the subject matter will find this book difficult; novices will find it impenetrable. Davies previously wrote An Introduction to Mormonism (CH, Sep'04, 42-0240) and The Mormon Culture of Salvation (CH, Jun'01, 38-5526). Summing Up: Recommended.
