Ecological resource problems that arise in wildland areas owing to excessive or poorly planned use are causing increasing concern to park and forest managers. This book will serve as a textbook and also a reference source for recreation resource managers; the thorough, straightforward ecological coverage of resource impacts will be of interest to ecologists, biologists, foresters, and wildlife managers. The five parts of this book include recreation use and resource impacts; impacts to resource components-soil, vegetation, wildlife, and water; factors affecting impacts; management alternatives, including methods of monitoring recreational impacts and visitor management; and a summary with helpful suggestions for managing wildland areas. Each section cites interesting real-life situations that are supplemented with pictures, graphs, and tables. In addition, each chapter has an up-to-date bibliography for those who want more information on a specific topic.-K.L. Carvell, West Virginia University
