This new edition retains the same format as the first (CH, Jul'05, 42-6575), with updated information in each of the six chapters. These are arranged in three sections: "People, Places, and Possibilities," "Why and How Latin Americans Do Business Differently," and "The Art of Making and Keeping the Deal." A former Foreign Service officer and business owner specializing in Latin America, Becker focuses on the cultural traits that shape the business environments of Latin American countries. He provides practical information and advice for business people on business opportunities in each country, as well as information on managerial and organizational behavior. The opening chapters define Latin America in culturally sensitive terms, provide brief country profiles, and discuss business opportunities, especially for small and medium-sized companies. The next section reviews the historical and cultural context of business and commerce in the region with practical advice on the conduct of business with Latin American companies and executives. The final section covers negotiating deals and the continuing business relationship once the deal is made. Each chapter concludes with a lengthy section of notes and sources. This well-researched, engaging book is a useful resource for international business collections. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division and graduate students; professionals. K. M.
