Sociologists Meloy (Rutgers) and Miller (Univ. of Delaware) provide a look at the process by which victims of gender-based violence are revictimized by the criminal justice system, the court system, and the media. The book aims to provide the most up-to-date data for scholars and students, and is written in a manner accessible to the practitioner and layperson alike. In addition to the chapters one might expect to find, Meloy and Miller include a chapter that focuses on the perspectives of sex offenders. As disturbing as this is to read (because most sex offenders take little responsibility for their actions and tend to blame the victims), it is critical for scholars and professionals to have access to their voices if they are to best address the myriad of problems associated with sex offenses. Additionally, the chapter on the media is unique and helpful in understanding the dilemmas associated with access and confidentiality. An overall excellent book. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
