This text provides an introduction to commonly used complementary therapies in medicine and related professions. It introduces psychoneuroimmunology as the medical field that addresses the mind-body link. It suggests a theoretical and scientific model based on quantum physics and systems theory for evaluating the effectiveness of complementary therapies. Organized according to chapters that address specific complementary therapies, the text is written by well-known practitioners of those therapies. Each well-referenced chapter includes primary references from peer-reviewed medical journals where available. Chapters vary in terms of the quality of critical analysis of the scientific literature. Academic faculty skilled in critical review of the literature wrote some of the chapters; other chapters are by clinicians skilled in the therapeutic approach, who are less critical in their review of the literature. Examples of complementary therapies addressed in this text include myofascial release, therapeutic massage, biofeedback, tai chi, Pilates, Reiki, and therapeutic touch. This resource will serve as an excellent textbook for courses on complementary therapies and as an excellent reference for readers wishing to explore specific therapies. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
