A review of the information on inactivity obtained from studies conducted on healthy volunteers, and a discussion of the present state of knowledge on psychiologic deconditioning related to inactivity and immobilization. Contributors present information on the changes that occur in the cardiovascular system, bone and muscle, metabolism and endocrine response, exercise tolerance, and psychosocial response. They include information on the clinical effects and management of deterioration and also note the limited information available for counteracting the many physiological changes brought about by inactivity. Each chapter contains a useful list of references. The editors of this work are medical scientists who have played an important role in many of the discoveries presented in this volume. They do a remarkable job of integrating the contributions of the various authors. This book is directed at research investigators, students, clinicians, and allied health professionals. This important contribution to the literature on physiology of inactivity should be available in biological and medical collections serving upper-division and graduate collections.-R.L. Jones, Pennsylvania State University, The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
