This exceptionally well-written and illustrated book describes the geology, history, and development of the remarkable landscape of the eastern Colorado Plateau in Utah and Colorado. The book begins with "An Introduction to the Science of Geology"; this concise chapter helps the reader understand what a traveler would see in this world-famous scenic region. In clear, easily understandable language and carefully selected photographs, maps, and cross-sections, Fillmore (Western State College of Colorado) describes the rocks, how they reveal the geologic story, and how they formed during the last 300 million years. The first half of the book deals with the formations that dominate the area. The second half consists of nine road logs that traverse the region, with explanations and, most importantly, interpretations of the features encountered along the way. Actually, the book is a fine primer for general geology observed in the field--a stand-alone, self-guiding tour book that all naturalists, and especially geologists, should carry as they travel through the area. The lessons in stratigraphy and geologic history are unparalleled. Ideally, all students of stratigraphy, sedimentary rocks, and sedimentation should be educated in this unique field region. Includes an extensive technical bibliography with 300-plus citations. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. T. L. T. Grose emeritus, Colorado School of Mines
