Acclaimed Chicano author and National Medal of Arts honoree Anaya's latest novel traces the allegorical journey of Randy Lopez from the Anglo world where he has spent many years working in fast food, construction, and the navy, and even writing a book titled My Life among the Gringos back to his ancestral home. Randy ponders all that he learned while away the racism, ignorance, and fear inherent in immigration laws; the universality of religion, including the origins of myth; and the blending of two cultures resulting in the betterment of each. He encounters mentors from his past along the way, as well as Death and the Devil, and finally the old teacher who helps him build a bridge to cross the River of Life, to reach his final destination. He completes his journey home to the place where his parents now dwell where brand new worlds are waiting to be explored. Anaya says he wrote his latest novel as his wife was dying. Its completion must have brought peace, and a new sense of beginning, to them both.--Donovan, Debora. Copyright 2010 Booklist
