Summary:"This portfolio discusses the various arrangements through which health care providers such as physicians and hospitals assume some or all of the financial risk for providing covered health care benefits to patients. It discusses the traditional model, under which insurers assume the full financial risk for arranging for the provision of covered health care benefits and health care providers are paid per procedure. The portfolio also examines various approaches that are being used to share financial risk with health care providers. It focuses in particular on some of the practical and legal issues surrounding accountable care organizations (ACOs), one of the most recent mechanisms for provider risk sharing."
